Radiation Risks Associated with Nuclear Medicine and X-ray Examinations

The risks associated with exposure to small doses of radiation (such as those encountered in a nuclear medicine or X-ray examination) are generally extremely low. Medical examinations that use ionising radiation cause only a tiny increase in the probability of a cancer occurring and these risks are overwhelmed by the probability of cancer occurring in the normal scheme of things.

Sadly, one in three of us normally develop cancer at some stage in our lives, and one in four of us will unfortunately die of the disease. The additional 1 in 5000 risk of developing a fatal cancer (such as is incurred when having a bone scan with 99mTc - see left) is small in comparison.
